Making His Favorite

Posted on

After last weekend’s adventure, followed by a sunburn and mild illness, I was definitely ready for a quiet weekend. Of course, a Saturday morning is now not complete without me cooking something and taking it’s picture. This week I made bacon-wrapped jalapeno poppers, which are Geoff’s favorite. I always get a tiny bit jealous whenever he says he likes another woman’s cooking better than mine, so I was happy to be able to make another successful version of an LV recipe. I have a limited number of desirable qualities. I have to stay on top of my game.

When Geoff got home from work, he managed to eat all twelve jalapeno poppers before dinner, which meant that I got to eat microwave Amy’s mac and cheese, which makes me terribly happy. We also tried a very grown-up whiskey cocktail from the book LV got me for my birthday. About all I can say is that I didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would. Whiskey is gross. I’d much rather have sweet Columbia Valley Riesling. I guess I’ll never be cool enough to hang out with the Dorothy Parkers of my generation. But we already knew that.

And I completely fell in love with Firefly. If you’ve been holding out like I have, just give up now. The writing just keeps getting better as it goes. Alas, there are only 13 episodes. Netflix is so rad. I probably never would have watched this show if it wasn’t just sitting there waiting for me whenever I got bored.

I will catch up. Someday, it shall be so.

It’s Alive

I woke up Friday morning finally feeling normal. Now, that still means that I was stumbling around for an hour not making any sense. For me, that’s completely normal. But I didn’t feel like I could barely move, and that was a welcome feeling indeed.

I got to work feeling highly normal and ready to rock. Somebody brought in this amazing cinnamon bread with cinnamon butter to spread on top of it’s toasty warm goodness. It was heaven. I wish I knew where it came from. I’d eat it all.

I started on this supposedly dreaded task of scanning old press clippings. I don’t know what everybody was freaking out about. It’s not any more boring than most of the other stuff I get to do. And if I’m real quiet, I can write in my journal while I’m waiting for things to process. Don’t tell anybody I’m slacking.

It was cider and pizza for us last night, and I was delighted. We watched the pilot episode of Firefly while stuffing our faces. I have to admit, I dig it. I never watched Buffy, even though I was a fan of the movie, and I knew people who were die hard fanatics. Somehow, I just never found the time for it. Since Firefly is streaming on Netflix, and I’m in the sad sad 80’s on my movies list, it was the best option for joint watching. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. I hope it gets even better. I already want half of the clothes.

Recovering from an illness, no matter how slight, can be pretty exciting. I was singing Calendar Girl by Stars all day. Stay alive.

Sunday Skip

Posted on

Sunday was a mixed bag. I nearly forgot to record it’s existence.

We started off with a win by actually managing to sleep in for once. When we finally woke up, it was after 9 am. It’s like I don’t even know us anymore.

Geoff suffered a defeat in the battle against the grill of doom and was consequently rather forlorn for most of the day. I had to drag him out of the house to keep him from continually enumerating all of the things we have to be stressed out about. He certainly has a right to feel stressed out. It can be bleak around here. But there’s no sense in wasting our only day off together moping. I happen to know from experience that getting through a moment of depression isn’t easy, but you can be distracted from it long enough to smile every now and then.

We walked into Waikiki where I finally bought myself a second swimsuit, then we enjoyed happy hour at the Hula Grill. We shared pork belly bao and fish and chips, both of which were excellent, especially since I was so hungry.

We also escaped the heat by jumping in the ocean in front of the Kahala Mandarin. We saw three weddings.

The season 3 finale of Game of Thrones was thoroughly underwhelming. There was a certain death I was hoping to see, so I guess I just expected too much. They seem to like putting all the action in the second to last episode. I can’t believe it’s so long until the next season. I hope the 4th season is better than the 4th book.

I have a surprise day off tomorrow, so I guess I can tell you how miserable my Monday was in the morning. Or maybe I’ll think of something better by then.

Recreating

We just now finally made it to the first episode if the new season of Arrested Development. I didn’t love it, but that’s not a about to stop me from watching them all. They’re obviously working with a much smaller budget, and I’m hoping they just haven’t found their rhythm yet. But I’m committed. I’d feel like I was turning my back on the Bluths if I didn’t watch it.

We also watched Star Trek Into Darkness, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Simon Pegg made me laugh on so many occasions. They all did. There was suspense, action, humor, drama, and best of all Benedict Cumberbatch. You just said his name out loud, didn’t you? He’s so delicious. Watching this movie actually made me want to go back and watch the source material. I don’t recall having those thoughts after the first J.J. Abrams movie. I really came to life these characters and wanted to learn more about them.

Reimagining a well known story can be so tricky. You just have to love it for what it is. Like everything else in life.

Excellent Decision

We just made the most fantastic decision to rewatch all the previous seasons of Arrested Development in preparation for the release of the new episodes which I’m really hoping match the awesomeness of what’s already been produced. This show makes me laugh pretty much nonstop. There’s no such thing as too much laughing.

I only have three weeks left with my hair. I feel like I should do something exciting with it before it’s all gone. I don’t know what, but I feel like I should appreciate it while it’s there. Is that weird? It totally is.

I yawned at least 47,000 times today. I wonder if anybody ever actually counts how much they yawn. I’m sure someone has. Not me.

I did make one other slightly good decision today. Next week is grill out week on Awesome on 20! We’re planning to grill at the beach on Sunday anyway, so I might as well feature the recipes I love to take on a picnic. Hopefully we’ll manage a few good photos at the park. And entertaining at a gorgeous public park is much better than trying to fit people into your tiny poor person house. It’s the Awesome on 20 way.

I am also about to make a decision to got to bed really early. I’m lame. That is all.

Projects

First off, I completed the monumental task of watching eight and a half years of Cheers, and just in time. Season 9 took a real dive. I was ready to cross that off my list. As far as style is concerned, Lilith wins my vote for favorite character on that show. At least once per episode I could be heard to exclaim “Holy crap, what’s he/she wearing?” Today Lilith was wearing a dress I would actually like to own. Also, you can tell she’s a dancer. That woman has some great legs. Woody wins the most endearing character award. By far.

bacon cupcakes

I made some chocolate cupcakes with bacon cream cheese frosting. They were quite awesome. I’ll be sharing the recipe Friday morning over on the other blog. I’m taking the rest into work tomorrow to try to avoid eating them all myself. It’s the hardest part of my job as a baker/blogger.

I’m thinking of cleaning up Emily’s room and rigging up a bit of a faux photo booth on the bed. It has the best light of any room in the house. I should be able to plop some food down on the bed and make it look awesome-ish. I can’t wait for our new lens to arrive. I have no idea what it does, but I like new toys.

I also want to start thinking about submitting links to sites like Tastespotting. I don’t think my photos are quite good enough yet, but I need to promote my blog somehow. I can’t just keep relying on friends and family. I feel bad for you guys.

I also have some design ideas in the works. I’m trying to figure out the best hosting situation. I don’t want to spend a ton of money. I love using wordpress, but I don’t know if I want to pay $100 to have it on my website. Blogger always looks so blocky and childish, though. Ugh. Too much thinking out loud is happening right now.

Why don’t I know about computer stuff? Why? When are they going to invent a super high speed knowledge brain implant. I need it now!

Where Did the Night Go?

How did it get to be after 9 pm already? I seriously don’t understand how this can happen. I came home from work and immediately started making cupcakes. Then in a blink, Geoff was home and it was off to the shop for dinner. I wrote a post for Awesome on 20 and updated my ipod. And then it was bedtime. But I’m not there yet. I’m here talking to you.

Being a baker/blogger/office slave is time consuming. Nothing is ever easy. Nothing worth having anyway.

I really have very little to report today. I can see why Cheers stopped winning Golden Globes after season 8. Sam Malone is looking pretty old in season 9. I’m ready to move on to the next thing on the list. I think it’s an 80’s foreign film.

We’ve also been watching Homeland on DVD. I’m not completely in love with it, but it’s intriguing. It definitely gets more interesting the further in I get. It’s pretty easy to predict when a minor character is going to bite it, though.

When are they going to bring back Breaking Bad? I’m dying to see the complete destruction of Walter White.

I wish I didn’t have 70 things ahead of Mad Men on my Instant Queue.

Also, more Parks and Recreation, please.

Have I bored you enough with talking about TV? I need to get interesting. For realz!
